Piast Gliwice bid farewell to legendary player and goalkeeper coach assistant Jakub Szmatuła, who spent 18 years with the club. Jakub Szmatuła ended his football career in 2023, but he still remained close to Piast Gliwice as a goalkeeper coach assistant. As a player, however, he helped the club achieve its greatest and so far only success - the Polish championship in the 2018/19 season, when the fight for the title with Legia Warszawa lasted until the last round. It seemed that he deserved a dignified farewell, but reality turned out to be different. Jakub Szmatuła received an unusual gift from the club - a Piast Gliwice pennant, a club mug, and a bottle of vodka signed with the club's logo. Piast Gliwice issued an official statement, in which they thanked Jakub Szmatuła for his work for the club. The opportunity for an official farewell of the coaches with the fans will come during one of the home games in the 2026/27 season. Jakub Szmatuła joined Piast Gliwice in 2010 from Górnik Zabrze. He played a significant role in the club's success, and his departure is a significant loss for the team.
